What Are “Shark Teeth”?
“Shark teeth” is a commonly used term for when a child’s permanent tooth begins to come in before the baby tooth has fallen out, creating the appearance of two rows of teeth. This can look very worrisome for many parents since permanent teeth are significantly larger than baby teeth, but rest assured that it’s all part of the growing process.
This most often occurs in the lower front teeth around ages 5–7 and is usually part of normal dental development.
The good news is that “shark teeth” are usually not an emergency. With proper monitoring and occasional intervention, children’s teeth typically align correctly as they grow.
Is This Normal?
In many cases, yes. It’s common for permanent teeth to erupt while baby teeth are still present for a short time.
Normally, the permanent tooth will continue to push against the baby tooth, causing it to loosen and fall out naturally.
Why Does It Happen?
“Shark teeth” may occur when:
- The baby tooth root hasn’t dissolved yet
- The permanent tooth erupts at a different angle
- There is limited space in the jaw
These variations are part of normal growth and development in many children.
When Should Parents Seek Treatment?
While many cases resolve on their own, if there are signs that the natural process isn’t progressing, an evaluation may be beneficial.
Parents are welcome to schedule a dental visit if they have concerns, especially if:
- The baby tooth is not loose at all
- The adult tooth is fully erupted behind or in front of it
- It’s been more than a couple of months with no change
- There is pain, swelling, or difficulty eating
In these cases, a dentist may recommend removing the baby tooth to allow the permanent tooth to move into place.
In general, tooth eruption problems will be discussed during routine dental checkups, which help ensure everything is developing as it should.
